Fur is super important for most animals. It keeps them warm when it’s cold and gives them their special, recognizable look. Without fur, some animals look so different, you might not even know what they are!
That’s exactly what happened recently when rescuers found a rare creature that looked like a hairless cat. But it wasn’t a cat at all! Keep reading to learn more about this surprising discovery and the amazing survival of this unusual animal.
Just last month, Hope for Wildlife, a rescue organization in Nova Scotia, took in one of the strangest animals they’ve ever encountered. A couple from West Arichat found the creature in their backyard. It was shivering in the cold and clearly struggling to survive. Unsure of what it was, they called in the experts.
According to the Canadian Press, when the rescuers arrived, they were in for a big surprise.
At first glance, the team thought they had found a Sphynx cat, one of those famous hairless cats. But when they got closer, they realized it wasn’t a cat at all—it was a completely bald raccoon!
Without its fur, the raccoon looked totally different. Normally, raccoons have that recognizable “mask” around their eyes and a thick coat to keep them warm. But this raccoon had no fur at all, except for a few tufts around its snout, ankles, and feet. The rescuers quickly realized the animal was suffering from severe alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss.
“There have been bald raccoons before,” explained Hope Swinimer, the director of Hope for Wildlife, “but nothing like this. It’s just tufts of fur around the snout, ankles, and feet.”
Despite being female, the rescuers decided to name her Rufus after the hairless naked mole rat character from the cartoon Kim Possible. The name suited her unique, fur-free appearance.
The rescue team shared updates about Rufus on Facebook. They explained that they were still figuring out the exact cause of her hair loss. It could be an autoimmune condition that was damaging her hair follicles. Thankfully, they had already ruled out other possible causes like fungal infections, mange, or parasites. The good news? Rufus’s skin was healthy, which was a huge relief for the team.
What amazed everyone the most was how Rufus had survived in the wild for so long without her fur. Raccoons depend on their thick fur to stay warm and protect their skin from the harsh weather. Somehow, Rufus had made it through winter, completely bald, and had not even gotten frostbite!
“We are astonished that this small lady survived the winter without fur and without getting frostbite or worse!” the rescue team said in their Facebook post.
But Rufus’s survival wasn’t just a matter of luck. The rescue team described her as having a “feisty” personality, which probably helped her fight through the cold and tough conditions. When she first arrived at the shelter, Rufus was in rough shape. She seemed weak and worn out. But it didn’t take long for her to show her true colors.
“For a few brief hours, we were in a panic,” Hope Swinimer admitted in an interview. “But then she became hungry, came out, and we saw a huge improvement. She’s becoming really feisty now.”
Given her condition, Rufus may never be able to return to the wild. If that’s the case, Hope for Wildlife is ready to provide her with a permanent home. Rufus will have her own special habitat at the shelter, complete with cozy places to keep warm, an outdoor area to explore, and fun things like hammocks and nesting boxes.
“We’ve never seen a raccoon without hair before!” Swinimer said, still amazed by Rufus’s situation. The fact that this little raccoon managed to survive in the wild for so long without her fur is nothing short of incredible. Everyone at the shelter is relieved that she was found in time and is now getting the care she needs.
Rufus’s story is truly amazing, and thanks to the dedicated rescue team, her future is looking much brighter!
