Hurricane Helene has left a heartbreaking mark, claiming at least 135 lives, with the Carolinas being hit the hardest. Among those who tragically lost their lives were 7-year-old Micah Drye and his grandparents in Asheville, North Carolina. The floodwaters carried them away after they tried to escape by taking refuge on a rooftop.
Megan Drye, Micah’s mother, was able to survive, but she suffered a devastating loss—the death of her son and her parents in the storm.
Megan’s sister, Jessica Drye Turner, shared the painful story online. She talked about Micah’s final, desperate cry as the waters rose: “Jesus! Please help me!” Jessica poured out her emotions, explaining how hard the grief has hit the family. At the same time, she shared that their faith remains strong.
“New grief and strong faith. New motto,” she wrote, capturing how they are holding on despite the unbearable pain.
Micah’s body was later found about a quarter mile from where Megan was rescued. The fierce flood had torn them apart and left the family shattered.
In the face of this tragedy, Megan’s other sister, Heather Kephart, started a GoFundMe page to help Megan, who lost everything in the disaster. The page also shares the final photo taken of Micah, where he’s smiling in his favorite Jurassic World T-shirt. His grandmother took this picture shortly before the storm hit, capturing a happy moment that would soon turn into heartbreak.
As the communities affected by the storm work to recover, the loss of the Drye family is just one example of the devastation Hurricane Helene has caused. But even in this deep sorrow, the strength of families like the Dryes will be key as they begin the long road to healing.
