Tyler’s Heartwarming Surprise for Grandma
Once, in a small town, a boy named Tyler decided to do something really special for his grandmother, who was in the hospital. As he was at the grocery store, he saw the cashier counting coins. Tyler knew he had to make a brave decision and talk to her.
“That’s a lot of fruit! Who are those for?” I asked him.
“They’re for my grandmother,” Tyler replied, his eyes sparkling with excitement. “She’s in the city hospital, and I’m sure these fruits will help her get better!” His determination and love for his grandma warmed my heart.
“What’s your name, young man?” I asked to know more about this caring boy.
“Tyler,” he said proudly.
“Tyler, that’s an impressive amount of money you’ve saved up!” I told him, noticing how much effort he had put into this. “But you’re actually $14 short.” But I smiled, adding, “That’s alright. You go on and take these fruits to your grandma.”
Tyler shook his head firmly. “No, no! I don’t want to take any of it for free!” Suddenly, his eyes lit up. “I’ve got an idea!” he exclaimed, his mind racing with possibilities.
You see, Martha, Tyler’s grandmother, was not just his caregiver; she was also his best friend. Tyler thought about her all the time and missed her dearly. His dad took him to see her as much as possible, but it was never enough for sweet Tyler.
That morning, he had watched a video of himself and Grandma Martha laughing together on their porch. Hearing her joyful laughter made him feel warm inside.
But now that she was in the hospital, fighting to recover from a serious illness, Tyler knew he wanted to help her, just like she had always taken care of him, especially when his parents weren’t around.
But what could he do? That’s when he remembered something Grandma used to say: “Food is like medicine, Tyler. When you’re feeling unwell, you have to listen to your body’s needs!” So he decided to bring her something special—juicy oranges that would brighten her day.
Excited, Tyler reached for his piggy bank, which was bursting with coins he had saved. These were no ordinary coins; they were 50-cent pieces he earned for every riddle he solved for his grandma. Solving her riddles was one of Tyler’s favorite activities, and it brought them closer together.
The next morning, Tyler eagerly convinced his dad to stop at the grocery store on their way to the hospital. “Please, Dad! It’s a surprise for Grandma, I promise!” With a big smile, he jumped out of the car, his backpack swinging as he dashed inside.
Once inside, he grabbed every fruit he could find—kiwis, strawberries, and, of course, those juicy oranges. He headed to the register, his heart racing with excitement.
“Good morning!” he said to the cashier, who was also the store’s owner, Stella. “I’d like all of these, please! I’m paying with cash. There’s $42.50 in my piggy bank. Is that enough?”
Stella, taken aback by his politeness, carefully counted the coins. After a moment, she had to tell him, “You’re $14 short, Tyler. But you know what? You can have all the fruits for your grandma, because your kindness is so heartwarming.”
But Tyler wasn’t having it. He didn’t want a handout. Instead, he said, “I have a riddle for you, Stella! If you get it right, I’ll run outside and grab the rest of the money from my dad. If not, I’ll pay with the coins I have.”
Stella grinned, intrigued. The people in line started to listen closely, curious about what was happening.
“What is always in front of us but can’t be seen?” Tyler asked, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
The crowd buzzed with guesses. “Air?” one person suggested. “Spectacles?” said another. Stella was deep in thought, trying to figure it out. Finally, after a few moments, she sighed and said, “I give up!”
With a triumphant grin, Tyler announced, “The answer is… the future!”
Stella laughed and handed him the bags of fruit, impressed by both his riddle and his big heart. Tyler rushed out to his dad’s car, eager to get to the hospital and surprise his grandma.
When he finally saw her, he couldn’t hold back. “Grandma! I brought you a surprise!” he exclaimed, full of joy. He shared his story about the fruits and the riddle.
Grandma Martha laughed, her eyes sparkling with pride. “Oh, Tyler, I’m so proud of you!” she said, hugging him tightly. His parents exchanged knowing smiles; they were secretly proud of their clever little boy too.
As they were chatting and enjoying the moment, someone knocked on the door. It was Stella! She smiled sheepishly and said, “I’m sorry to interrupt, but I was so impressed with your kindness towards your grandmother that I wanted to help too. I’d like to cover some of her medical expenses.”
Tyler’s parents were stunned with gratitude. His mom and dad, who struggled to make ends meet, could hardly believe their ears. Grandma Martha placed a hand on her chest, overwhelmed with happiness.
“I also want to make sure that every week, a bag of fruits will be waiting for you at my store, Tyler,” Stella added with a warm smile.
As the excitement filled the room, Stella remembered her own grandmother, who had told her riddles just like Tyler’s. The very riddle Tyler had asked was the last one her grandmother ever shared. Stella had kept the last 50 cents she earned, a sweet reminder of their special moments together.
