The talented actor Dustin Hoffman, best known for his role in Rain Man, quietly battled and overcame cancer in 2013. Even after his victory, he chose to keep his recovery mostly private.
According to his publicist, Jodi Gottlieb, Hoffman was “feeling great and in good health” after successful cancer treatment. Early detection and surgery completely cured the cancer.
Hoffman first gained fame in 1967 with his breakthrough role in the romantic comedy The Graduate, earning his first Academy Award nomination. This performance made a lasting impact on the film industry, propelling him to stardom at age thirty.
He delivered outstanding performances in movies like the touching drama Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and the political thriller All the President’s Men (1976).
One of Hoffman’s most iconic roles was in Tootsie, where he played a man who pretended to be a woman to get a part in a soap opera. Hoffman admitted that this role had a profound effect on his perception of women.
“I was shocked to learn that I wasn’t considered conventionally attractive as a woman,” Hoffman said. He realized how society unfairly limits women’s appearances, which changed how he treated women both in real life and on screen.
Despite Tootsie being a huge hit, Hoffman saw beyond its comedic aspects. The movie, which became the second highest-grossing film of the year, tackled significant themes and resonated deeply with audiences.
Hoffman won his first Oscar for Kramer vs. Kramer in 1980, followed by his second Oscar for Rain Man in 1989. He also received six Golden Globe Awards and one Primetime Emmy, showcasing his immense talent. His career was thriving.
However, in 2013, Hoffman suddenly disappeared from the spotlight, leaving fans wondering about his whereabouts. They didn’t know he was secretly fighting cancer.
The reason for his absence wasn’t revealed until a few months after he directed the British comedy Quartet in 2012 and finished filming Chef in 2014, where he starred alongside Jon Favreau and Sofia Vergara. Hoffman’s representative finally disclosed that he had been undergoing cancer treatment. “Hoffman is in good condition and has completely recovered from the illness,” Jodi Gottlieb informed the public.
Despite his health challenges, Hoffman continued acting. He starred in films like Sam and Kate in 2022 and the upcoming sci-fi drama Metropolis in 2024.
He also voiced the beloved Master Shifu in two additional Kung Fu Panda films between 2008 and 2024.
Recently, Hoffman and his wife were seen strolling through the streets of London, looking happy and in love.
The 86-year-old Hollywood icon appeared youthful and carefree, engaging with photographers and browsing boutiques with his 43-year-old wife.
