Pop star Madonna’s latest Instagram post gives fans hope. Is her biopic finally moving forward?
Over a year ago, Madonna’s biopic—a film about the life story of the Queen of Pop—was put on hold. In an Instagram post, the 65-year-old now hints that work on the project is resuming.
A Clear Hint?
The post is a reel consisting of a photo series showing Madonna sitting at a typewriter, surrounded by scattered papers. In the caption, she explains, “I need a lot of coal to make this (My Life Story).”
In one of the images, the title “Who’s That Girl” is seen on the first page of a stack of papers resembling a script—a nod to Madonna’s 1987 film comedy “Who’s That Girl” and the eponymous single by the 65-year-old. This could also be the name of the biopic, as the word “untitled” is crossed out next to it. Another look at the script reveals the words “rewritten by Madonna and ECW.” The initials might refer to screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson, 60, who has been involved in the project since Diablo Cody, 46, reportedly exited.
Project Gains Momentum Again
In 2020, it was first announced that Madonna wanted to produce a film about her life. However, there were initial complications in finding a suitable lead actress. It was only two years later that it was confirmed actress Julia Garner, 30, would take on the role. In January 2023, it was announced that the project was postponed. Instead, Madonna announced a world tour, which took her to 35 cities and concluded in April this year.
Shortly thereafter, “The Sun” reported that filming for the biopic was set to begin within the next twelve months and that Garner was already intensively preparing for the role. According to the “Hollywood Reporter,” one of the previous issues in the film’s development was that there were many extensive drafts of the screenplay.
What Will It Be About?
According to Madonna, the film will follow her “struggle as an artist trying to survive in a man’s world as a woman,” a journey she described as a “happy, sad, crazy, good, bad, and ugly” story of the making of a superstar. The singer herself is reportedly set to direct the film.
