My Brother Kept Insulting My Husband for Being ‘Just an Electrician’ – But Karma Had the Last Laugh
My brother and I are like night and day, but we do share one thing: we both know how to persevere. We grew up in a family where everyone has fancy jobs. While we both became successful, we chose very different paths. I married Mark, an electrician who runs a booming business, but my brother just can’t get over the title “electrician.”
After years of hearing his mean comments, I had finally had enough. I wanted to teach him a lesson, but before I could, karma had a plan of its own.
I was raised in a comfortable home. My parents worked hard to give us a good life and taught us the importance of working for what you want. My mom is a brain surgeon, and my dad runs his own business. My older brother, Jack, became a lawyer, but instead of working hard, he loves to flaunt his wealth.
He drives fancy cars, wears designer clothes, and can’t stop bragging. Jack is even engaged to his third fiancée, treating her like another trophy to show off.
In contrast, I’ve always been more down-to-earth. My husband Mark and I live a comfortable but modest life. What Jack doesn’t know is that Mark, besides being an electrician, graduated from business school and built a company that makes four times what I earn! Even with all this success, Mark stays humble, pouring much of his earnings back into his business and helping others in need.
My parents really appreciate this, especially when we surprised them with a luxurious all-expenses-paid cruise for their 30th wedding anniversary.
But Jack’s arrogance is like a brick wall. One Mother’s Day, after I treated our mom to a relaxing series of spa sessions, Jack gave her a flashy, expensive watch. He couldn’t help but take a jab at my husband. “This watch is a limited edition.
The salesperson knew I was a lawyer and gave it to me right away,” he bragged. “An electrician could never afford something like this,” he sneered, looking straight at Mark with a smirk.
Mark, being the kind-hearted man he is, just smiled and let it slide, but I could see the hurt in his eyes. Jack kept making condescending remarks, making fun of Mark’s job like it was no big deal. What Jack didn’t realize was that Mark could easily buy his law firm and still have money left over! We stayed quiet, knowing that Jack’s day would eventually come.
And it came sooner than I thought!
A few weeks later, during a family barbecue, Jack made his grand entrance—showing up late, of course, in his shiny Porsche with his fiancée by his side. He strutted around, bragging about his latest court victory and the extravagant honeymoon he was planning for his next wedding.
Just as I was ready to call him out by comparing my real designer purse to the cheap knock-off he got for his fiancée, chaos erupted outside.
Everyone rushed out to see Jack’s beloved Porsche being hooked up to a tow truck. Panic spread across his face as he argued with the driver. “This must be a mistake,” Jack stammered, his voice shaking. The driver shook his head and said, “Sorry, it’s being repossessed. You’re months behind on payments.”
Jack went pale as he stood there in shock, and his fiancée slipped quietly into the house, embarrassed. Alone and vulnerable, Jack finally admitted the truth—he had lost his job! A major case he mishandled had caused his firm to be sued, and now no one would hire him. His debts had piled up, and he couldn’t keep up with his flashy lifestyle anymore.
At that moment, I felt a strange mix of pity and satisfaction. Life had finally taught Jack the humility I wanted him to learn. Without saying a word, I walked over to him and said gently, “Maybe this is a sign to rethink things.” For the first time, Jack’s arrogance faded, replaced by a vulnerability I had never seen before. “I guess I had this coming,” he admitted quietly.
Before I could say anything more, Mark stepped forward and put a hand on Jack’s shoulder. “If you need work, I could use an extra set of hands in my company. It’s not glamorous, but it’s honest work and pays well.”
Jack looked shocked. “You’d actually hire me after everything I said?”
Mark smiled warmly and replied, “Everyone deserves a second chance.”
That day, as the sun set, Jack accepted Mark’s offer. He worked hard, starting from the bottom and learning the trade. Over time, his arrogance melted away, replaced by a newfound respect for honest labor and deep gratitude for the chance he had been given.
Karma had done its job, but in the end, our family was still there for Jack. The road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but we stood by him every step of the way. And maybe, just maybe, he became a better man for it.
