NFL reporter Doug Kyed has shared the heartbreaking news that his two-year-old daughter, Hallie, has passed away, nine months after being diagnosed with leukemia.
In April 2023, the Kyed family received the shocking news that little Hallie had leukemia. Doug, who works for the Boston Herald, announced on Instagram that his daughter lost her fight on January 21, 2024.
Hallie’s condition worsened after she relapsed following a bone marrow transplant. Doug shared the painful details, saying, “Hallie died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning as Jen and I held her hands in bed. We’re completely lost and heartbroken without Hallie. Our lives will never be the same.”
Despite the relapse, Doug and his family tried to stay hopeful, even though they knew the challenges were immense. “I’m choosing to stay positive,” Doug wrote at the time.
“Hallie has beaten every single obstacle that AML has thrown her way. This will be her toughest test, but if anyone can overcome it, it’s our fierce little Hallie Bear.”
But even as they held onto hope, Doug admitted that they understood the gravity of the situation after Hallie’s relapse. “We knew the prognosis was poor when she relapsed after her bone marrow transplant,” Doug explained.
“So the whole family spent special time at the hospital last week, but we held out hope for remission because of how brave, strong, and resilient Hallie had been through her entire nine-month battle with acute myeloid leukemia and all its complications.”
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML), according to the American Cancer Society, starts in the bone marrow but quickly spreads into the blood. From there, it can move to other parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and central nervous system.
Doug revealed to the Boston Herald that since Hallie’s diagnosis, he had spent nearly half his nights at Boston Children’s Hospital. “My wife and I have been taking turns caring for Hallie and our 5-year-old, Olivia, at home,” he said.
Doug’s wife, Jen, spoke about the immense pain of losing their daughter, describing it as a deep, unfillable void in her heart. “There is a giant hole in my heart, and the pain is excruciating,” Jen shared.
“I will never understand why or how something so horrible could happen.”
Rest in peace, Hallie.
