On Brazilian TV, Prince William emphasized how important open communication with children is to him—even when it comes to difficult topics such as the cancer diagnosis of his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales.
Prince William, 43, spoke openly on the Brazilian show “Domingão” about the cancer diagnosis of his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, 43, and shared how the couple has dealt with questions from their three children about it.
Prince William: “We decided to talk about everything”
During the interview, conducted by TV presenter Luciano Huck, 54, during William’s visit to Brazil last week, the Prince of Wales revealed that they had been completely honest with Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, about their mother’s health problems and those of their grandfather, King Charles, 76. “Every family goes through difficult times and faces challenges together. How you deal with these moments makes all the difference. We have decided to tell our children everything, both the good and the bad news. We explain to them why certain things happen and why they might be upset.”
The British heir to the throne went on to explain: “Many questions remain unanswered – I think that’s the case for all parents. There is no magic formula for parenting, and we have decided to talk about everything.”
Catherine, Princess of Wales, announced in an emotional video in March 2024 that she had been diagnosed with cancer. A few weeks earlier, King Charles had already made his diagnosis public. In January 2025, Kate announced that she was in remission.
Catherine, Princess of Wales, “probably does most of it”
In the new TV interview, Prince William also gave further insights into his family life. “I usually take the children to school, so Catherine and I share that, but she probably does most of it.” However, he tries to spend as much time as possible with his three children. “Play dates, taxi driving, sports days, competitions, playing in the garden when I can.”
“Our children don’t have cell phones”
The royal couple is also concerned with a question that other parents ask themselves: When should their children be allowed to have a cell phone? “It’s really difficult. Our children don’t have cell phones. When George starts secondary school, he might get one with restricted access.“ Here, too, Kate and William clearly rely on open communication: ”We talk to him and explain why we don’t think it’s right. With unrestricted access, children see things on the internet that they shouldn’t see. With restricted access, on the other hand, I think it’s good for sending messages.”

Emotional moment reminiscent of Princess Diana
There was another emotional moment during the conversation: Luciano Huck presented the prince with a photo of Princess Diana, †36, taken during her visit to São Paulo in 1991. The picture shows William’s mother holding an HIV-infected child in her arms – a gesture that helped break taboos surrounding the disease at the time. “She became a very important figure in the fight against prejudice,” said the Brazilian TV presenter, to which Prince William replied: “I carry her social and humanitarian legacy with me every day.”
