Just before the opening ceremony, Snoop Dogg carried the Olympic torch in Paris—and clearly had a great time doing it.
Snoop Dogg, 52, took his honorary role with humor. As one of the last celebrities, the rapper received the Olympic flame on the afternoon of July 26, in front of the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. Just before the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics, he carried the torch for a few meters to the cheers of the fans.
Cheers and Dance Moves
Images showed the beaming musician in the classic white Olympic outfit and gold sneakers in front of the stadium. Snoop Dogg clearly enjoyed his role as torchbearer, as seen in an Instagram post by the rapper and the official account of the Games. He greeted cheering fans at the sidelines, flashed the peace sign with his fingers, and delighted the crowd with some dance moves.
A “Great Honor” for Snoop Dogg
In a media round, Snoop Dogg emphasized how special the moment with the Olympic torch was for him. “I consider it a great honor. I never could have dreamed of something like this. I will show my best side,” he promised.
For him, the memory of Muhammad Ali (1942-2016) made the torch relay a particularly meaningful moment. The Parkinson’s-stricken boxing legend had famously raised the torch with a trembling hand in 1996, and the images went around the world. “It was very emotional for all of us to see the champion holding the torch and lifting it up. That’s exactly how it feels for me. My own version of it,” explained Snoop Dogg.
The avid Olympic fan will also appear in other roles during the Games. He is serving as a special correspondent for the US network NBC in Paris.
