All I wanted for my 80th birthday was to see my daughter, so I decided to surprise her by driving to her house. When she opened the door, she looked a bit uncomfortable and asked, “Dad, why are you here?”
“I just wanted to spend my birthday with you,” I said, smiling. But her reaction wasn’t what I expected. “Dad, you can’t stay,” she said. “I’m really busy right now.”
Feeling disappointed, I offered to wait on the couch until she had some free time. But she firmly insisted, “No, Dad, you really need to go right now.” Reluctantly, I turned and walked back to my car, even though I didn’t want to leave.
As I was heading out, I heard some noises coming from inside the house. Concerned, I glanced through the window and saw two unfamiliar people inside. My worry for my daughter’s safety grew, so I quickly called the police.
The officers arrived quickly and approached the house cautiously. After a few tense moments, they emerged with the two strangers in handcuffs. My daughter rushed out of the house, tears streaming down her face, and hugged me tightly. “I’m so sorry, Dad,” she sobbed.
“I was trying to protect you. Those men broke in right before you arrived. I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t want anything bad to happen to you.”
I hugged her back, feeling a wave of relief. “It’s okay, sweetheart. I’m just glad you’re safe.”
After hearing our side of the story, the police assured us that the intruders would be dealt with. Despite the unexpected drama, it turned out to be the best birthday I could have imagined, all because I got to spend it with my daughter.
