Molly’s life had been full of struggles, and her biggest concern was her son, Tommy. Moving from town to town and changing schools so often was really getting to him. He started acting out—getting into fights and bothering other kids. Molly never thought that a call from the school principal would bring up a part of her past she thought was long gone.
At home, things were tense with her husband, Nigel. Nigel never treated Tommy like his own son and often referred to him as “your son.” One night, Nigel lost his patience and said, “Why can’t you get your son to behave?” Molly was deeply hurt by Nigel’s rejection of Tommy, even though they had been together for years.
The next day, Molly went to the school to talk about Tommy’s behavior problems. To her shock, her ex-boyfriend Christian was standing next to the principal. Christian, who had been out of Tommy’s life for a long time, said, “I see myself in him. I want to make things right because I made a mistake.”
Molly was taken aback by Christian’s unexpected return and wasn’t sure how to respond. But she knew something had to change. That evening, after another fight with Nigel, Molly came home to find him passed out with a bottle of alcohol.
Finally, Molly decided it was time to make a move. “We’re going somewhere better, Tommy,” she said as she packed their bags and woke Nigel. “Somewhere our love will be felt.”
As they walked out of their old apartment, Molly felt a spark of hope for the first time in years.
