A Note from the Delivery Guy Made Me Install Security Cameras around My House – I’ll Forever Be Grateful to Him

The delivery guy’s scrawled note sent me racing to the backyard trash cans, my heart pounding. What I found there shook me to my core. His cryptic message might have saved my family from something truly terrifying—but the danger was far from over.

I often order food when I don’t feel like cooking for my kids. Over time, we’d gotten to know Ravi, the delivery guy. He was always friendly, giving Kai and Isla high-fives before he left. But last Tuesday night felt different. Ravi showed up looking nervous, his hands fidgeting. He shoved the food into my hands and rushed back to his car, barely saying a word.

“What’s up with Ravi?” Kai asked, peeking out the window. I glanced at the taillights fading down the street and shrugged. “No idea, buddy. Maybe he’s in a hurry.”

As I brought the food inside, my mind was still on Ravi. Something about his behavior felt off. But then, something on the back of the bag caught my eye. Scrawled in shaky handwriting were the words: “CHECK YOUR TRASH CAN.”

I froze, my heart skipping a beat. My hands trembled as I set the bag down. “Hey, you two go wash up. I’ll get everything ready,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. Once they were out of sight, I bolted for the backyard. The message played over and over in my head as I neared the trash cans. My palms were sweating as I lifted the lid of the first one. Nothing. Just our usual garbage.

I moved to the second can, my stomach churning. As I threw open the lid, I froze in shock. Inside, wrapped in an old, dirty blanket, were a bunch of gloves, small tools, and a bottle filled with some kind of liquid—no label, just a strange, ominous object.

“Mom? Are you okay?” Isla’s voice startled me. I slammed the lid shut and spun around, my heart racing. “Yeah, sweetie. Just… checking something. Go back inside. I’ll be right there.”

Once she was safely inside, I quickly pulled out my phone. I dialed the sheriff’s office, my voice shaking.

“Sheriff’s Department, this is Leona speaking.”

“Leona, it’s Nora. I need you to come over right away. I found something weird in my trash,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

“Slow down, Nora. What exactly did you find?”

I explained the gloves, tools, and the bottle with the strange liquid, my voice barely above a whisper. “Don’t touch anything,” Leona said, her tone serious. “I’ll be there soon. Stay inside with the kids until I get there.”

I hung up, my mind racing. Our neighborhood had been dealing with break-ins recently—robbers using chemicals to break locks and leaving no traces behind. It hit me like a ton of bricks: they were planning to break into my house next.

“Mom, what’s going on?” Kai asked as I walked back into the kitchen. “You look scared.”

I forced a smile. “Everything’s fine, honey. Let’s eat dinner, okay?”

But before we could dig in, there was a knock at the door. I jumped up, startled, but I relaxed when I saw Leona through the peephole. “Kids, stay here and finish your dinner,” I said, stepping outside to talk to her. I quickly explained what I’d found and told her about Ravi’s strange behavior.

“You did the right thing calling me,” Leona said, her eyes scanning the street. “I’ll take a look at what’s in your trash and send it to the lab. In the meantime, you should think about beefing up your security. We’ll patrol your house tonight in case the thieves try to strike.”

I nodded, already planning my next move. “I’ll call a security company first thing in the morning.”

Leona gave me a reassuring pat on the shoulder. “Try to rest, Nora. We’ll handle this.”

But sleep was the last thing on my mind that night. I spent hours researching security systems, jumping at every little noise outside. By morning, I was a nervous wreck, exhausted and jittery from too much caffeine.

At 8 a.m., I called the first security company I could find. “Hi, I need cameras installed today, if possible.”

“Our earliest slot is next week,” the receptionist replied.

“You don’t understand,” I cut in, my voice cracking. “I think someone’s planning to break into my house. I need those cameras now.”

There was a pause. “Let me see what I can do. Can you hold?”

After what felt like forever, she returned. “We’ve had a cancellation. Our team can be there in two hours. Will that work?”

I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. “Yes, thank you. Thank you so much.”

The next few hours flew by. I called in sick to work, kept the kids home, and paced around the house until the security team arrived. As they installed cameras, I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching me. Every car that drove by, every person walking their dog felt like a threat.

As the security team finished up, Leona’s patrol car pulled into the driveway. She stepped out, her face serious. “Nora, can we talk inside?”

I led her into the house, feeling my stomach twist with worry. “Kids, why don’t you go play in your rooms for a bit?” Once they were out of earshot, Leona spoke in a low, urgent voice. “The lab results came back. That liquid in the bottle? It’s a powerful corrosive used to weaken locks.”

I sank into the couch, feeling weak. “So they were really planning to break in?”

Leona nodded. “It looks like it. But you’ve done everything right. You’ve got cameras now, you’re aware of the threat, and we’re increasing patrols in the area.”

“What about Ravi?” I asked. “Should I talk to him?”

“If you see him, yes. But be careful. We don’t know if he’s involved or just a witness.”

Just then, I saw Ravi outside, getting off his bike. “He’s here now,” I whispered to Leona. “What should I do?”

“Go talk to him,” Leona said. “I’ll keep an eye out.”

I stepped outside, heart pounding. “Hey, Ravi,” I called. “Got a minute?”

He looked tense, but nodded. “Yeah.”

“I’m sorry about yesterday,” he said before I could even ask. “I should’ve said something earlier, but I was scared.”

“Scared of what?” I asked, though I had an idea.

Ravi glanced around nervously. “When I parked, I saw some guys messing with your trash. They looked shady. I wanted to warn you, but I was afraid they might still be around.”

Relief flooded me. “So that’s why you left the note?”

“Yeah,” Ravi nodded. “I didn’t know what else to do. I’m sorry if I freaked you out.”

“Ravi, you might’ve saved my family,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “Thank you.”

He looked relieved. “Really? You’re not mad?”

“No, not at all,” I said, smiling. “In fact, I owe you big time.”

As Ravi rode away, I felt a mix of gratitude and fear. The danger wasn’t over, but at least I knew we weren’t alone in facing it.

Back inside, Leona was on her phone, speaking in hushed tones. She hung up as I approached. “We’ve got leads based on Ravi’s description,” she said. “We’ll catch these guys, Nora. Just stay vigilant.”

That night, after tucking Kai and Isla into bed, I sat in front of the security monitors. The cameras showed empty streets, quiet and still, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was out there, watching, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Whatever happened next, I knew we wouldn’t be facing it alone.
