Childless Woman Returns from a Business Trip a Day Early and Finds a Baby in Her House – Story of the Day

After a long and tiring business trip to New York, Alicia finally stepped off the plane and felt the warm Miami night wrap around her like a soft blanket. She had managed to finish her work earlier than expected and decided to catch the first flight home. Even though it was past midnight, she was excited to surprise her husband, Luke. They had talked almost every day while she was gone, but a whole month away felt like forever. She missed him terribly.

As she quietly unlocked the front door, Alicia tiptoed inside, careful not to make a sound. The house was dark and peaceful. She wanted to slip into their bedroom without waking Luke, imagining how surprised he would be to find her there when he woke up.

Her heart beat faster as she walked down the hallway toward their room. The moonlight streaming through the window was just enough to see by. She didn’t even need to turn on the light. She spotted Luke’s figure lying on the big bed, his steady breathing making a soft rhythm.

Alicia smiled softly and moved quickly to change into her pajamas, feeling the cozy night take over her travel-worn body. But then—her breath caught.

Right next to Luke, on her side of the bed, lay a tiny bundle wrapped carefully in a soft blanket. There was a pillow placed just right, to stop the baby from rolling off the bed. But Alicia and Luke didn’t have children. So, what was going on?

Her mind raced. Luke grew up in an orphanage; he didn’t have family nearby. This baby couldn’t be a niece or nephew. Yet here it was, sleeping peacefully on their bed.

Alicia swallowed hard and moved to wake Luke. She gently shook his arm. “Luke! Luke! Wake up!” she whispered, trying to keep her voice calm even though she was shocked.

Luke stirred, rubbing his eyes. “What? Who… Alicia? What are you doing here?” he murmured, still half asleep.

“Meet me in the kitchen right now,” Alicia said quietly but firmly, walking away before he could say more.

Luke followed slowly, still rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “You’re here early,” he said, squinting in the dim light.

“Cut the small talk. Who is that baby, Luke? What’s going on?” she demanded.

Luke yawned and ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t really know. Someone left him on our doorstep a few days ago, and I’ve been taking care of him.”

Alicia’s eyes widened. “What? That doesn’t make sense! We have to call the police immediately!”

“We will. I keep forgetting with everything going on. But honestly, Alicia, I’m exhausted. You must be tired too after your trip. Let’s get some rest and deal with this in the morning, okay?”

“No! We have to figure this out now!” she said, frustration creeping into her voice.

“Shhh, please! You’ll wake the baby,” Luke said quietly, glancing back toward the bedroom. “Let’s just sleep tonight. We’ll sort this out first thing.”

Alicia sighed and nodded reluctantly. She followed him back to the bedroom and lay down on the other side of the baby. Their bed was huge, so there was plenty of space. Shockingly, exhaustion pulled her under quickly, and she slept deeply without any dreams.

The next morning, at seven a.m., Alicia woke up to low voices coming from the living room. She turned her head, but Luke and the baby were gone. Curious and a little nervous, she slipped out of bed and quietly moved toward the sound.

Her heart pounded when she overheard a woman’s voice.

“Luke, when are you going to tell her? This can’t keep going like this!” the woman said sharply.

“Please, keep your voice down,” Luke answered, his voice tense. “I don’t know how to tell her yet.”

Alicia froze. Who was that? Was this woman connected to the baby? Was she Luke’s secret? Her mind raced with worries.

Suddenly, Luke pleaded, “Let’s wait for the DNA results. I promise I’ll tell her everything when we get them.”

DNA test? Alicia’s jaw dropped. Could Luke have a secret child? Was this woman the baby’s mother? She stepped into the living room without making a sound, her eyes burning with questions.

“What’s going on here? I want the truth right now, Luke,” Alicia said firmly, folding her arms. “I heard everything. What DNA test? Is she the baby mama?”

Luke and the woman both turned around, surprised by Alicia’s sudden appearance.

The woman smiled—a little nervously—and laughed softly. “Baby mama?” she repeated. “That’s funny.”

“Nothing is funny about this! Luke, did you cheat on me with this woman?” Alicia almost shouted, hurt and anger burning inside her.

“No! I swear I never did,” Luke begged, stepping toward her with open hands. “Please, just listen.”

“You have ten seconds!” Alicia snapped, crossing her arms tightly.

Luke took a deep breath and said, “This is my sister, Linda.”

Alicia’s arms dropped, stunned. “What?”

Luke explained, “Linda and I met by chance two weeks ago at the supermarket. We looked so much alike, it was shocking. We started talking and found out we were both orphans. We think we grew up together at the same orphanage. The memories are fuzzy, but I believe we played there as kids. Now, we’re waiting for DNA results to confirm if we’re siblings.”

“That’s crazy,” Alicia whispered, staring at Linda. She looked exactly like Luke, like a female version of him.

Luke continued, “Since then, we’ve become close. Last night, Linda had an emergency and asked me to watch her baby, Tony. I was too tired to explain everything last night, but that’s the truth.”

Alicia took a deep breath, feeling the anger melt into understanding. She invited Linda inside to hear her side. Linda shared her story, and it was touching. Luke apologized for keeping it from Alicia during her important trip, but he didn’t want to ruin her focus with complicated family drama.

Linda added with a hopeful smile, “The DNA test results should come in a few days. You can see them too, Alicia. We’re not lying. I hope it’s true—having family means everything, especially when you’ve had so little.”

Alicia felt relief wash over her. Linda had a husband, which made the story even more believable. And little Tony was absolutely adorable.

A few days later, the test results came back. They confirmed Luke and Linda were siblings. The three of them, plus baby Tony, began spending more time together. Alicia was happy to have family around—finally Luke had a nephew to dote on. She realized that family, no matter how unexpected, was the most precious thing in the world.
