When Nella noticed something odd about her husband, Eric, she knew she had to find out what was going on. What she discovered would change her life forever in ways she never imagined.
It all started one quiet evening. They were finishing dinner when Eric suddenly said something that shattered their 12 years of routine.
“I need some space, Nella,” he said, his voice steady but distant.
Nella froze. Eric was always the steady one in their relationship—calm, reliable, the kind of person who made her feel safe no matter what. Hearing this from him was like watching the ground crack beneath her feet.
“Space? What do you mean?” she asked, her heart pounding.
“I’ll be sleeping in my car for a few nights,” he said, avoiding her eyes. “I just need to clear my head.”
Sleeping in his car? That was absurd! Nella’s mind immediately went to the worst places. Was he cheating? Did he want a divorce? Every possibility made her feel sick.
“I can give you space here,” she said quickly, trying to keep her voice calm. “The guest room, the pool house—whatever you need.”
Eric gave her a small, tired smile. “It’s not about us. I promise. I just need to do this.”
And with that, he was gone.
For the next ten nights, Eric left after dinner and returned before sunrise. Each day, he looked more tired, his hair messier, his face paler. Whenever she asked him what was going on, he gave the same answer: “It’s nothing bad. Trust me.”
But how could she trust him when everything felt so wrong? By the fifth night, Nella couldn’t take it anymore. Her imagination was running wild—she pictured him meeting someone else, hiding a terrible secret, or even planning to leave her. She had to know the truth. So, she decided to follow him.
That night, she quietly got into her car and tailed Eric as he drove. He didn’t go far—just to a nearby park. She watched from a distance as he parked under a tree, expecting him to meet someone. But to her surprise, Eric didn’t even leave his car. Instead, he pulled out a pillow and blanket, stared at his phone for a while, and then lay down to sleep.
What was he doing? Why would anyone choose to sleep in a car when they had a warm, comfortable bed at home? Nella’s confusion only grew.
By the tenth night, she couldn’t hold back any longer. She drove to the park again, marched up to his car, and knocked on the window. Eric jumped, startled, before unlocking the door.
“Nella? What are you doing here?” he asked, his voice shaky.
“What am I doing here?” she shot back, sliding into the passenger seat. “What are you doing here? Are you meeting someone? Is that why you’ve been acting so strange?”
Eric sighed deeply, rubbing his face with his hands. He looked utterly exhausted, like he was carrying the weight of the world.
“No,” he said softly. “I’m not meeting anyone. I promise there’s no one else.”
“Then what is it?” she demanded. “Why are you doing this to yourself—and to me?”
For a long moment, he didn’t say anything. Then, he reached into the backseat and pulled out a stack of children’s books and a small recording device.
“I’ve been recording bedtime stories,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
“Bedtime stories?” Nella repeated, confused. “Why? And why would you keep that from me?”
Eric’s hands trembled as he held the books. “Because I didn’t want to worry you,” he said, his voice breaking. “A few weeks ago, I was diagnosed with cancer. It’s… it’s bad, Nella.”
The world seemed to stop. Nella’s breath caught in her throat, her mind struggling to process what she was hearing.
“I wanted to leave something behind for the kids,” Eric continued, tears filling his eyes. “Something to remind them of me when I’m gone.”
Tears streamed down Nella’s face as she reached for his hand. “You don’t have to do this alone,” she said fiercely. “We’ll get through this together.”
From that moment on, everything changed. Their lives revolved around doctor’s appointments, treatments, and moments of joy they created despite the pain. Eric became a superhero dad—making pancakes shaped like dinosaurs, dressing up for Halloween, and playing silly games with their children. He poured all his energy into making memories.
On a snowy winter morning, Eric passed away peacefully, surrounded by love. The house felt unbearably empty without him. Days later, while sorting through his things, Nella found his recordings. Among them, one file stood out. It was titled Our Story.
With trembling hands, she pressed play. Eric’s voice filled the room—warm, steady, and full of love.
“Once upon a time,” he began, “there was a princess—kind, smart, and braver than any knight. She had the biggest heart of all…”
As Eric told their love story as if it were a fairytale, Nella felt his presence wrapping around her like a hug. His words were a gift—a way to keep him close, even in his absence.
“And even though the man grew old and weary,” his voice continued, “his princess ruled their home with love and strength.”
Through her tears, Nella smiled. Whenever life felt heavy, she returned to his recordings, letting his words remind her of their incredible love and the memories they had created. Even in loss, Eric’s love was still with her, guiding her forward.
