The kind workers at the orphanage named her Xueli, which means “Snow White” (Xue) and “beautiful” (Li). A name that would perfectly suit her in the future!
Xueli was born with albinism, a genetic condition that means her skin, hair, and eyes are very light because her body doesn’t make enough melanin. While some people might see her as different, Xueli was about to show the world how beautiful she truly is. Luckily, she was adopted by a loving Dutch family who raised her with care and support.
At just 11 years old, Xueli’s life took a surprising turn. A designer in Hong Kong noticed her unique beauty and invited her to model for a photoshoot. The designer wanted to celebrate different kinds of beauty and called the campaign “perfect imperfections.” “She asked if I wanted to join her fashion show in Hong Kong,” Xueli shared in an interview with the BBC. “That was an amazing experience!”
However, Xueli’s journey hasn’t been easy. Many people with albinism face stigma, prejudice, and discrimination because of their looks. In some extreme situations, they are even hunted due to false beliefs that their bones have magical healing powers. Xueli reflected on her past and said, “I’m lucky I was only abandoned.”
Sometimes, models with albinism are portrayed as angels or ghosts in movies and advertisements. This portrayal makes Xueli sad. “It makes me sad,” she expressed, hoping people will see her and others for who they truly are, not just for their unique appearances.
But Xueli is not one to back down. She is determined to make a difference in the world. “I’m not going to accept that children are being murdered because of their albinism. I want to change the world,” she passionately declared.
