A Mother-in-Law’s Lies Almost Broke Us—But Love Won in the End
Having twins should have been one of the happiest moments of my life, but instead, it turned into a nightmare I’ll never forget. After years of struggling with my mother-in-law’s manipulative ways, I hoped becoming parents would make my husband, Derek, finally put our family first. I was wrong.
Everything started to fall apart the day I left the hospital with my newborn daughters, Ella and Sophie. I had been dreaming about this moment for months: Derek meeting us with flowers, holding his baby girls with tears of joy in his eyes. But instead, my phone buzzed, and everything I imagined shattered.
“Hey, baby,” Derek said, his voice tight. “I’m so sorry, but I can’t pick you guys up as planned.”
I frowned, adjusting Sophie’s blanket. “What? Derek, I just gave birth to twins. What could possibly be more important?”
“It’s my mom,” he said quickly. “She’s having chest pains. I have to take her to the hospital. She needs me.”
His words hit like a punch to the gut. “You have to be kidding me,” I said, barely able to keep my voice steady. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier? Derek, I just had your children! I need you here!”
“I know,” he sighed. “But this came up suddenly. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
Tears burned in my eyes. I wanted to scream, but instead, I took a deep breath. “Fine. I’ll get a taxi.”
“Thank you,” he said quietly before hanging up.
I bundled my girls into their car seats, trying to hold myself together as I called a cab. Deep down, I knew Derek wouldn’t be coming home anytime soon. His mom, Lorraine, lived in another city, and Derek always put her needs first.
When the taxi pulled up to our house, I froze. The lawn was covered with my things—suitcases, diaper bags, even the crib mattress. My heart pounded as I stepped out, clutching Ella and Sophie close. I tried the door, but my key didn’t work.
A cold wave of panic washed over me. On one of the suitcases was a folded note. I grabbed it with trembling hands.
“Get out of here with your little moochers. I know everything.
—Derek”
I stared at the words, my chest tightening. Derek couldn’t have written this. The man who kissed my belly every night, who cried when he heard our daughters’ first heartbeats, wouldn’t do this.
Desperate, I called him, but his phone went straight to voicemail. Again and again, I tried, but it was useless.
In tears, I called my mom. “Derek changed the locks,” I choked out. “He left a note. I don’t know what to do.”
She arrived in minutes, her face a mix of anger and worry. “This doesn’t make any sense,” she said, hugging me tightly. “Derek loves you and the girls. Come to my house—we’ll figure this out.”
That night, I barely slept. My mind raced with questions. Why would Derek do this? What did the note mean?
The next morning, determined to get answers, I left the twins with my mom and drove back to the house. Peering through the window, I was stunned to see Lorraine sitting calmly at the dining table, sipping tea like nothing had happened.
I banged on the door. “Lorraine! Open up!”
She answered with a smug smile. “Oh, Jenna. Didn’t you see the note? You’re not welcome here anymore.”
“Where’s Derek?” I demanded, my voice shaking.
“At the hospital, taking care of his sick mother,” she said with mock innocence.
“You’re standing right here!” I snapped. “You lied to him, didn’t you?!”
Her smirk widened. “And what if I did?”
My stomach twisted. “Why would you do this?”
She leaned closer, her voice icy. “Because our family needs a boy to carry on the name, and you gave us two useless girls. I knew you’d ruin Derek’s life, so I fixed it.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. She had lied about being sick, locked me out, and stolen Derek’s phone—all because my daughters weren’t boys.
Furious, I drove to the hospital, where Derek was waiting. His face lit up when he saw me, but that quickly turned to shock as I told him what happened.
“She did what?” he said, his voice trembling with anger. Without another word, he stormed out, and I followed him home.
When we got there, Lorraine was still sitting at the table. Derek confronted her immediately. “Mom, what did you do?”
“I was protecting you,” she said, crossing her arms. “You deserve better than—”
“Enough!” Derek shouted. “You lied, you manipulated me, and you threw my wife and babies out of their home. I’m done. Get out. You’re not welcome in our lives anymore.”
Lorraine’s confidence crumbled as she realized she’d lost. She left, muttering angrily under her breath.
Derek turned to me, his eyes full of tears. “Jenna, I’m so sorry,” he said. “I let her come between us, but I’ll never let that happen again. You and the girls are my family.”
In that moment, I saw how much he truly loved us. It had been a terrible ordeal, but we made it through together. And from that day on, our family only grew stronger.
