Inheritance can cause problems fast, and Daphne’s story is proof. After her father passed away and left her the family home, she asked her stepmother to either pay rent or move out. When her stepmother refused, Daphne thought it was only fair to evict her. But what she didn’t expect was the shocking twist that would come a year later, leaving her both stunned and furious.
Here’s what Daphne shared:
“After my dad died, he left me his small house. I told his wife, who had $10,000 that he left her, that she could either pay rent or go live with her son. Instead of agreeing, she looked at me and said, ‘How dare you?’ She refused to pay.
I couldn’t believe her attitude, so I did what I had to—I evicted her. After that, a whole year went by without hearing anything from her. Then, out of nowhere, she called me and demanded I come see her. I didn’t want to, but I went anyway.
When I arrived, I was shocked. She was living in a tiny apartment, and she told me something I never saw coming. She said that before my dad died, he used all the rest of his savings to buy this apartment for her, so she’d have a place to stay if she was ever forced to leave the house.
But then she hit me with the real shocker. She said my dad made her sign a deal—if she stayed in the house they shared, the apartment would go to me after she passed. But if she was forced to leave, she could give it to anyone she wanted. And now, because I kicked her out, she’s giving it to her son!
I was stunned. Then the anger kicked in. All I did was protect what was rightfully mine. She had the money to pay rent—this house wasn’t some free hotel! Now, the apartment my dad paid for with his hard-earned money is going to her son instead of me? And I didn’t even know about it until now! I feel so betrayed.
