Before stepping onto the big stage of America’s Got Talent in 2016, singer-songwriter Grace VanderWaal gave everyone a sneak peek of her talent. At just twelve years old, she confidently announced, “I’m doing my own song tonight because I really think that it shows who I am.” Grace, who was born in Kansas but living in New York at the time, added with a hopeful smile, “Hopefully. I’m hoping it does.”
And boy, did it! Grace’s amazing performance earned her the title of “the next Taylor Swift,” and it set her on a sparkling journey in the music world. By the end of Season 11, she took home a jaw-dropping $1 million prize!

Grace VanderWaal’s Big Audition
When Judge Simon Cowell asked Grace how she felt about winning, she replied with a grin, “Miracles can happen, so possibly.” When Simon asked her what her song was about, Grace said proudly, “It’s about me.” She shared that most of her school friends “don’t really know I sing.”
But that was all about to change! Grace had a unique voice and a special way of writing songs that spoke to her heart, and both her friends and AGT viewers were about to discover it.
With her ukulele in hand, Grace captivated the audience from the very first note of her song “I Don’t Know My Name.” It was an honest and emotional piece about finding oneself.
“My name is unknown to me. I don’t play by the rules of the game,” she sang passionately. “You say I’m just trying, that’s right.”
What Did the Judges Say?
As Grace stood there, waiting to hear the judges’ opinions, the crowd fell silent. What would they think?
Howie Mandel was the first to speak up, and he didn’t hold back. “This is a show about surprises,” he declared. “You referred to yourself as a miracle, and in my opinion, you are a gorgeous, walking miracle.”
Howie pointed out a line in her song, saying, “You’re original. I believe that everyone will know your name. It’s both right and wrong for people not to know it yet. They will probably recognize your name soon!”
Then, in a thrilling moment, Howie pressed the Golden Buzzer, sending Grace straight into the live performances! Overwhelmed with joy, Grace broke down in tears, and Howie rushed over to give her a heartfelt hug. “You are incredible,” he told her with a warm smile.
Next, Simon chimed in, impressed by Grace’s talent. “Grace, you know what I predict for you? You could be the next Taylor Swift,” he said confidently.
“What a wonderful girl! What a wonderful personality!” Simon exclaimed to the other judges.
Heidi Klum couldn’t contain her excitement, saying, “Amazing! That truly is amazing.”
“She is unique,” Mel B added, nodding in agreement.
Curious about Simon’s thoughts, Howie asked, “Do you believe that you are now a star?”
Simon replied, “I think we’ve got a star,” though he was a bit “annoyed” that he didn’t get to hit the Golden Buzzer himself.
After her incredible journey on America’s Got Talent, Grace VanderWaal started her acting career in the movie Stargirl and has since released several albums. She even plays a pop star in Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming film, Megalopolis.
