It starts when a little girl picks up the phone and says, “Hello?”
“Hi honey. This is Daddy. Is Mommy near the phone?” Daddy asks, sounding cheerful.
“No, Daddy. She’s upstairs in the bedroom with Uncle Paul,” she replies innocently.
Daddy’s heart skips a beat. After a quick pause, he says, “But honey, you don’t have an Uncle Paul.”
“Oh yes, I do! He’s upstairs in the room with Mommy right now!” she insists, sounding completely sure of herself.
Daddy takes a deep breath, trying to stay calm. “Uh, okay then, here’s what I want you to do: Put the phone down on the table, run upstairs, knock on the bedroom door, and shout to Mommy that Daddy’s car just pulled into the driveway.”
“Okay, Daddy! Just a minute!” she replies eagerly and rushes off. A few minutes later, she comes back to the phone, breathless with excitement. “I did it, Daddy!”
“And what happened, honey?” Daddy asks, his curiosity growing.
“Well,” she starts, “Mommy got all scared, jumped out of bed with no clothes on, and ran around screaming! Then she tripped over the rug, hit her head on the dresser, and now she isn’t moving at all!”
Daddy’s eyes widen in panic. “Oh my God!!! What about your Uncle Paul?” he asks, his voice rising.
“He jumped out of bed with no clothes on, too! He was really scared and jumped out the back window into the swimming pool! But I guess he didn’t know that you took out the water last week to clean it. He hit the bottom of the pool, and I think he’s dead,” she says, her tone surprisingly calm.
Long Pause
Finally, Daddy asks, “Swimming pool? … Is this 486-5731?” He tries to process everything, feeling a mix of confusion and fear.
