Do you think you have crazy relatives? Well, let me tell you about mine, and you might change your mind.
My sister-in-law, Candice, always felt entitled to whatever she wanted. If she saw something she liked, she believed she deserved it. But nothing—and I mean nothing—could have prepared me for her most outrageous demand yet. She wanted me to have a baby just so she could keep it as a gift.
And when I refused? She wouldn’t take no for an answer. That’s when I decided to teach her a lesson she would never forget.
The Family Situation
My husband, Harry, and I had been together for nearly fifteen years, married for seven, and had two beautiful children—Maya and Luke. Our little family was everything to me. But when it came to our extended family? Things were… complicated.
From the very first day I met Harry’s mother, Charlotte, and his sister, Candice, I knew something was off. At first, I told myself I was just nervous or overthinking things. I had no idea back then just how much trouble these two women would bring into my life.
Candice made it clear how self-centered she was before we even got married. She threw a massive tantrum because I had dared to choose someone else as my maid of honor. And if that wasn’t enough, she whined that my wedding dress was “prettier” than hers. As if my wedding was supposed to revolve around her!
She nearly ruined the entire day, but thankfully, Grace, Harry’s grandmother and the only genuinely kind person in his family, stepped in to save the moment. Grace was my rock in that crazy family, but unfortunately, she lived too far away to step in every time Candice or Charlotte acted out.
But nothing could have prepared me for what happened just before Candice’s thirtieth birthday. It made me question reality itself.
The Insane Proposal
Candice rarely visited us, and when she did, she kept her distance from the kids, always complaining that they were “too noisy” or “gave her headaches.” But one evening, she showed up out of nowhere and actually played with Maya. It was so unlike her that it sent a shiver down my spine.
Then, during dinner, she kept glancing at Harry and me, clearly wanting attention.
“I have an announcement!” Candice suddenly declared, her voice ringing through the dining room. “I’m going to be a mom!”
Harry choked on his food. I froze, my fork halfway to my mouth.
“What?” I managed to say.
Harry wiped his mouth, still coughing. “Who… is the father?” His brows furrowed. “You’re not even dating anyone.”
He was right. Candice hadn’t had a boyfriend since she scared the last one away for not buying her an expensive handbag.
Candice waved her hand dismissively. “That’s actually why I came over today.” She sat up straighter. “The parents of my daughter will be you two.”
My stomach twisted. “What?!”
She sighed like I was the crazy one. “I’m almost thirty, and I don’t have a husband.” She smiled sweetly. “The perfect birthday gift would be a daughter.”
Harry and I exchanged horrified looks.
“You want Stephanie to be your surrogate?” Harry asked, his voice tight.
Candice shook her head. “No, I want you two to have a baby for me.”
I placed my hands firmly on the table. “So it would be our child… and you expect us to give it to you?”
“Not just give—give it to me for my birthday. What’s the problem?” Her tone was light, casual, like she was asking for a sweater.
I blinked, utterly speechless.
Harry let out an exasperated sigh. “Candice, absolutely not.”
Candice scoffed. “Stephanie, you’ve always been so selfish.”
Harry slammed his hand on the table. “Enough! Leave. Now.”
Candice’s face burned red. She stood up, shaking with anger. “I’ll tell Mom about this!” she screeched before stomping to the door and slamming it behind her.
The Crazy Escalates
I hoped that would be the end of it. I should have known better.
A few days later, Candice showed up again—this time with Charlotte by her side. Candice’s arms were overflowing with shopping bags from baby stores. At first, I thought she had finally decided to be a good aunt and bring gifts for Maya and Luke. But the smug look on her face told me otherwise.
Charlotte walked in without waiting for an invitation, sat on the couch, and motioned for Harry and me to join her. Candice stood nearby, grinning ear to ear.
“Candice told me that you agreed to give her a baby,” Charlotte said.
“What? No, we told her we weren’t going to do that,” I said firmly.
Charlotte’s face darkened. “Why not?”
“Because it’s insane,” Harry replied.
Charlotte folded her arms. “Stephanie, as a woman, you should know that the older you get, the harder it is to have children. Candice is already almost thirty.”
I could barely believe what I was hearing. “I’m not giving my child to your daughter, who has no idea what it means to be a parent.”
“I already bought everything!” Candice chirped, pulling out baby clothes from her bags.
Harry buried his face in his hands. “Candice, you are not ready to be a mother. And asking someone to have a child for you is completely insane.”
“But you’re my brother!” Candice whined.
While they argued, I suddenly realized Charlotte was missing. My stomach dropped. I rushed to our bedroom—and found her poking holes in our condoms.
“What are you doing?!” I shouted.
Charlotte turned to me, completely unfazed. “Making everyone’s life easier.”
My blood boiled. “You’ve lost your mind!”
“Listen, it wouldn’t be hard for you to have another baby, but it is hard for Candice. So I just decided to help a little,” she said smugly.
That’s when I decided. They wanted a baby? I would give them exactly what they deserved.
The Perfect Revenge
For nine months, I played my role. I faked a pregnancy, complete with a fake belly. I let Candice plan a nursery. Then, on her birthday, I arrived holding a baby carrier wrapped with a giant bow.
Candice gasped and reached out. “Let me see her!”
I handed her the carrier. She tore off the bow, pulled back the blanket, and—
“WHAT IS THIS?!” she shrieked, holding up a plastic baby doll.
Harry and I burst into laughter.
“The only baby you’re fit to take care of,” I said, smirking.
Grace, who had been watching silently, stood up. “Candice, you are completely out of your mind.”
Charlotte turned pale. “M-Mother, please—”
Grace held up a hand. “Enough. I’m writing you both out of my will.”
Silence. Pure shock. Then Candice collapsed into a sobbing mess.
Harry and I walked out, hand in hand, knowing we had finally shut them down for good.
