One evening, as the sky turned dark, Linda Meyers was on her way to dinner. She had been looking forward to a pleasant evening, but out of nowhere, heavy rain poured down. Without an umbrella, she was instantly drenched. Her carefully styled hair clung to her face, and her elegant blouse and jacket became soaked, making her look disheveled.

Looking around for shelter, she spotted a well-known cafe nearby. It was a place where wealthy and famous people often dined. The golden lights inside glowed warmly, and Linda decided to step inside to wait for the rain to stop. But just as she reached the entrance, a porter stepped in front of her, blocking the way.

“Ma’am, this is an exclusive cafe. You need a reservation to enter,” he said, his tone firm. Then, he eyed her from head to toe, his lips curling into a smirk. “And honestly, it doesn’t seem like you can afford to dine here anyway.”

Linda’s face hardened. She had not expected such rudeness. “That’s a bold assumption,” she replied coolly. “Please call your manager. I would like to speak with him.”

The porter hesitated but eventually disappeared inside. A few moments later, a man in a suit with a name tag reading “Simon” appeared. He looked at Linda with mild annoyance.

“Ma’am, I’m currently hosting over a hundred guests inside,” he said impatiently. “Let’s not waste our time here. I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

Linda stood her ground. “I just need a place to stay until the rain stops. I will even order something.”

Simon shook his head dismissively. “I can’t let you in looking like that. You’ll scare away our customers.”

Linda inhaled sharply, stunned by his words. Without another word, she turned and walked back into the storm, searching for another place to wait.


The next day, when Simon arrived at work, he was surprised to see the cafe owner waiting for him. The owner, a distinguished older man, waved him over.

“Simon, today is an important day,” the owner began. “A good friend of mine and his wife are coming. They are considering buying this cafe. I want everything to be perfect.”

Simon nodded. “Of course, sir. I’ll make sure everything runs smoothly.”

All day, Simon barked orders at the waitstaff, making sure the cafe was spotless and that every dish was prepared flawlessly. When evening came, the owner greeted the special guests warmly and then motioned Simon over to their table.

“Let me introduce you to our manager,” the owner said proudly. “He is an excellent part of our team. He is kind, sympathetic, and always helpful.”

Simon straightened, ready to accept the praise—but then, as the woman turned to face him, his heart nearly stopped.

Linda.

The woman he had thrown out in the rain was sitting before him, elegantly dressed, a knowing smile on her lips.

“Very nice indeed,” Linda said smoothly, looking Simon in the eye. “I can see that he is exactly as you described.”

Simon felt his stomach drop. His face turned pale. He wanted to disappear.

Then, Linda turned back to the owner.

“You have a wonderful restaurant,” she said. “And such… endearing staff. My husband and I are happy to buy the cafe.”

Simon swallowed hard. He had made a terrible mistake, and now, he would have to work for the very woman he had insulted.


The next morning, Linda and her husband arrived at the cafe as its new owners. They wasted no time getting to know the staff and observing how everything was run. Then, Linda called Simon into her office.

“Simon,” she said, folding her hands on the desk, “my husband and I have made a decision. We are demoting you to a waiter.”

Simon’s eyes widened in shock. “Please, ma’am—”

Linda held up a hand. “The way you treated me the other night was unacceptable. A manager should never judge a customer by their appearance.” She handed him a waiter’s apron. “You will work as a waiter. Let’s see if you can learn some humility.”

Humiliated but unwilling to lose his job completely, Simon took the apron and got to work.


A few days later, as Simon was serving customers, an elderly woman entered the cafe. She sat down at a small table and ordered a sandwich and tea. When she finished her meal, Simon handed her the bill.

The woman checked her purse, then gasped.

“Oh dear,” she said, flustered. “I must have forgotten my wallet at home. I am so sorry. I can wash dishes, or clean tables to pay you back.”

Simon looked at her kindly. “Don’t worry, ma’am. I will cover your bill this time.”

The woman’s eyes filled with gratitude. “Thank you, young man. You are very kind.”

Simon smiled. “People should help each other out. A few days ago, the new owner of this restaurant gave me a second chance. I want to be like her. After all, I believe in karma.”

The woman chuckled. “I think you will be a manager again soon.”

Simon frowned slightly. How did she know about his demotion?

Just then, Linda walked over to the table. She placed a gentle hand on Simon’s shoulder.

“This woman is my friend,” Linda revealed. “I asked her to come here today as a test. I wanted to see if you had truly learned your lesson.”

Simon’s heart pounded.

Linda smiled. “I am happy to say that you passed. Starting tomorrow, you will be reinstated as manager.”

Simon felt his chest swell with emotion. He had been given another chance—and he would not waste it.


From that day forward, Simon changed. He treated every customer with kindness, regardless of how they looked. He also took great care of the staff, making sure they worked in a positive and fair environment. Under his leadership, the cafe flourished like never before.

Lesson to Learn:

  1. Never judge someone by their appearance. Simon and the porter assumed Linda was not important because of how she looked, only to find out she was their future boss.
  2. People deserve a second chance. Linda could have fired Simon, but she chose to teach him a lesson instead. He became a better person because of it.
