Walmart announces shift to digital price tags at 2,300 of its stores

In early June, Walmart began testing this technology at one of its stores in Grapevine, Texas. The test was such a success that, just weeks later, the company made another big announcement: the digital price tags will be introduced to 2,300 stores over the next two years.

Right now, Walmart employees spend a lot of time walking through the aisles every week, manually adjusting prices on thousands of products, whether it’s for new items, sales, or markdowns. It’s a long and tiring process. But with these new digital shelf labels, employees will be able to update the prices of thousands of items in just minutes using a mobile app.

Daniela Boscan, who leads the Food & Consumables team at a Walmart store in Hurst, Texas, shared how this new technology has changed her workday. “The digital shelf labels have transformed my daily routine,” Daniela said.

She explained that the new system has made her job much more efficient, saving time and effort. “A price change that used to take an associate two days to update now takes only minutes with the new DSL system. This efficiency means we can spend more time assisting customers and less time on repetitive tasks.”

And the benefits don’t stop there. The digital shelf labels also make it easier for employees to find products on the shelves, whether it’s for restocking or picking items for online orders. This makes everything faster and ensures customers can get their items more quickly.

But with any new system, there are always some concerns. People are wondering if Walmart might start using dynamic pricing, where prices could change depending on factors like demand. While it’s still unclear if that will happen, only time will tell if Walmart takes that step.
