Sarah Harper had known Erica Vernon for over six years. The two families had moved into their respective homes at almost the same time, and both couples were newlyweds. Naturally, the neighbors became friends.

Sarah and Kieran were happy to have good people next door, and Erica and Lester Vernon quickly grew close to them. They’d spend weekends together, grilling in the backyard, sharing laughs, and chatting about everything under the sun. Life was simple and carefree.

But as time passed, cracks started to appear. Within the first couple of years, Sarah noticed that something wasn’t right with the Vernons. It wasn’t just the petty arguments that had become more frequent; there was something darker at play.

Lester Vernon, who had once been charming, started becoming increasingly suspicious and controlling. His jealousy was palpable, and it was clear he had a quick temper. Sarah watched from her own home as the once-friendly couple slowly fell apart.

Erica, always kind and gentle, seemed to suffer in silence. She would often greet Sarah with a forced smile, but her eyes were always red, as though she’d been crying. The loud arguments that echoed through the walls next door became routine.

Sarah couldn’t help but feel heartbroken for Erica. She’d always been loyal to Lester, or at least Sarah thought she was. After all, the last thing Sarah ever imagined was that Erica could have been keeping a secret that would shatter everything.

One day, after hearing yet another heated exchange through the thin walls of their homes, Sarah couldn’t take it anymore. She ran into Lester at the supermarket, and before she could stop herself, she found herself confronting him.

“Lester,” Sarah said, carefully choosing her words, “I know it’s none of my business, but I hate seeing you and Erica so unhappy. Have you two considered counseling? I know Erica loves you more than anything.”

Lester gave her a cold look, then snorted in disbelief. “Listen, Sarah, if I were you, I wouldn’t be defending Erica. You think she’s your friend, but she isn’t.” With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Sarah standing there, stunned and confused.

Just a few weeks later, things took an even worse turn. Lester walked out on Erica, leaving her devastated and alone. But when Sarah found out the shocking truth, she was floored—Erica was pregnant, three months along.

“Erica, did you tell him?” Sarah asked, her voice full of concern. She was already beginning to put the pieces together, but she had to hear it from her friend.

Erica’s face crumpled. Tears streamed down her face. “I did, Sarah, I really did. I told him, but he said it wasn’t his. He accused me of cheating! He told me I was going to have to raise this baby on my own, that I was a liar!” Erica broke down in Sarah’s arms. “I can’t do it, Sarah. I can’t do it alone.”

Sarah stood tall, putting a reassuring arm around her. “You won’t be alone. I promise, Kieran and I will help you. We’re in this together, okay?”

That night, Sarah sat down with Kieran to explain the situation. “I’ve promised Erica we’ll help her through this. She’s in such a bad place right now.”

Kieran didn’t seem thrilled. “Honestly, Sarah, I don’t know if this is a good idea. You’re talking about a huge responsibility. We don’t even know her that well.”

Sarah’s eyes widened in disbelief. “We’ve lived next door to her for six years, Kieran! You’ve seen how much she’s struggled. She’s my friend, and I thought you liked her too.”

Kieran sighed, looking reluctant. “She’s fine, I guess. But she’s more your friend than mine.”

Sarah knew that tone. It was the same one he used when he wasn’t quite sure how to say “no” without sounding too harsh. She smiled sweetly, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Please, Kieran. Be kind to her. She’s been through so much already.”

Kieran gave her a half-smile. “You always know how to convince me.” He leaned in and kissed her neck. “Your mom was right, I am a sucker for the ‘lucky bump.’”

Sarah giggled, her heart lighter. “I’ll take that as a yes. Thank you, babe.”

So, from that moment on, Sarah became Erica’s rock. She went with her to doctor’s appointments, to every scan, to Lamaze classes, and even to the natural childbirth course Erica was so determined to take, despite claiming she’d never deliver a baby without painkillers.

“Honestly,” Erica said with a laugh during one class, “I can’t imagine having a baby without the meds, but it’s good to know what to expect!”

It was a relief when the big day came. Erica had been feeling increasingly uncomfortable for days, and when Sarah received the frantic call, she didn’t hesitate for a second.

“Sarah, I think it’s happening!” Erica cried, gasping for air.

Sarah dropped everything and rushed over. She arrived to find Erica on her couch, her water having broken, and panic written all over her face. “It’s okay, Erica, it’s going to be okay,” Sarah reassured her, even though she could feel her heart racing. “I’m calling the hospital, they’ll be here soon.”

But the hospital said it would be a while—at least half an hour, maybe more. Sarah did what she could, making Erica comfortable and trying to keep her calm. But as the minutes passed, Sarah noticed something terrifying: the contractions were coming faster, and Erica’s breathing grew more erratic. Sarah took a quick look down and her blood ran cold—she could see the baby’s head beginning to crown.

“Erica!” Sarah gasped, her voice tight with fear. “The baby’s coming now, it’s time!”

“No, no! It’s too soon! It’s supposed to take hours!” Erica screamed, gripping the couch tightly.

“There’s no stopping it,” Sarah said, her voice steady despite the panic in her chest. “Push, Erica. You can do this.”

Sarah grabbed the supplies she had prepared—hot water, a clean blanket, scissors, and cord—and knelt beside Erica, encouraging her through the pain. It felt like an eternity, but finally, the baby emerged, slick and crying. Sarah caught the baby gently, placing him on a soft blanket before cutting the umbilical cord just like they had taught her in the class.

Erica lay back, exhausted and in shock. Sarah looked down at the tiny baby in her arms and gasped in surprise. There, on the side of the baby’s neck, was a small but unmistakable bump—a bump Sarah knew well. A bump she had only seen on Kieran. The ‘lucky bump.’ Her stomach dropped, and the pieces of the puzzle snapped into place.

“Lester was right,” she whispered, her voice shaking with disbelief. “You and Kieran… you were having an affair.”

Erica froze, her eyes widening with horror. “No! Sarah, no, I swear—”

“I have proof!” Sarah interrupted, raising the baby gently in her arms. “This baby… He’s Kieran’s!”

Erica broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. “Please, Sarah, don’t hurt him! Yes, it’s true. We’ve been lovers for years. I’ll tell you everything, but please, don’t hurt my baby.”

Sarah’s expression hardened. “I’m not like you, Erica. I don’t hurt people, I don’t destroy lives.” She gently placed the baby in Erica’s arms and stood up. “I can’t be here anymore.”

With that, she turned and walked out, leaving Erica to wait for the ambulance.

That night, when Kieran returned home, he found the house empty and silent. There was a note on the kitchen table. Sarah had left him, filed for divorce, and made it clear there was no turning back. She couldn’t live with the betrayal.

It took Sarah a long time to heal from the pain, but eventually, she found someone new. A man who treated her with the love and respect she deserved. They married, and now, Sarah is happy. She’s pregnant with their second child, and she knows that trust, love, and loyalty are the foundations of any true relationship.
