When the young Sherlock Holmes becomes entangled in a murder case in a new series, Colin Firth will also be part of the cast.
British director Guy Ritchie, 55, previously delved into Sherlock Holmes in two films in 2009 and 2011. He is currently working on the series “Young Sherlock” for the streaming service Prime Video – and appears to be directing a true heavyweight in acting. Colin Firth, 63, who won an Oscar for “The King’s Speech” in 2010, will join the cast, as reported by the US industry magazine “Variety”.
Firth is set to portray the character Sir Bucephalus Hodge, although further details about the character are not yet available. However, the British actor joins an already illustrious cast. Hero Fiennes Tiffin, 26, who once played the eleven-year-old Tom Riddle in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” takes on the lead role of young Sherlock. Also joining are “Shakespeare in Love” star Joseph Fiennes, 54, uncle of the lead actor, Natascha McElhone, 54, known from the US series “Californication,” and Zine Tseng, 30, from “The Three-Body Problem.”
From murder to global conspiracy
In late May, it was officially announced that Amazon had commissioned a series about the young detective for its streaming service, with “Snatch – Pigs and Diamonds” director Ritchie at the helm. The Briton will not only direct but is also involved as an executive producer. The production is based on the “Young Sherlock Holmes” book series by Andy Lane, 61.
“In ‘Young Sherlock,’ we will see an exciting new version of the detective that everyone thinks they know, but in a way they couldn’t have imagined before,” Ritchie explained in May. “We will break down this enigmatic character, discover what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.” This reinterpretation confronts the 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes with a murder at Oxford University, which evolves into a “world-spanning conspiracy.”
